Synopsis

Burgess Meredith (Rocky) plays Ernie Pyle a real life war correspondent to screen legend Robert Mitchum's Lt./Capt Bill Walker an officer leading his men through war torn europe. Meredith narrates this Pulitzer prize winning story of the G.I. (Shorthand for Government Issue.) portraying the everyday trials and tribulations of warriors in the field of battle. Robert Mitchum gained his only Acadamy Award nomination for his role in this film. Fans of Robert Mitchum and fans of American interpretations of the neo-realist cinema will find this film fascinating as it is an early version of a documentary style of filming in common use today. Mitchum's acting style was so casual and laid back his talent was invisible in the many roles he played. Here is an early Mitchum developing that style in a unique blend of fact and fiction.
